Antibiotics in Food

This week's Blog topic is regarding the use of antibiotics in factory farmed animals in the attached link.  Antibiotic resistance was addressed in last week's evolution lecture.  Given the information and background you received,  answer whether you think the use of antibiotics in animals in factory farms should or shouldn't be regulated and why.

The use of antibiotics in factory farms should be regulated to an extent. Because animals are being fed antibiotics to help them grow and develop at a faster rate; it is causing a problem of creating new antibiotic-resistant bacteria which we could catch. On the other hand without these drugs the factory farms would be more inefficient and produce less product. Most, if not all, of these factories are just looking for profits and they need to produce the most product to be able to sell. But there should be regulations to protect the consumers to ensure that we will be safe when eating the product. The FDA should set a limit on the amount of antibiotics each factory can purchase and distribute to their animals. This is not fair to the animals to have to be put on antibiotics just so they can mature faster.

  1. You make a really good point! I like the idea of regulating antibiotics to an extent to protect the consumer. It's true though that factory farms are just capitolists looking to make a profit, but if we don't assist them in making a profit they might change their ways. This is usual in a consumer market not dealing with food products. Most of the time people don't know where exactly their food comes from and what's in it;therefore, they're unprotected. I agree that the FDA should place some restrictions on the drugs they use on their livestock.

  2. Antibiotics should definitely be regulated and maybe even disallowed altogether. These antibiotics used to increase the maturation process is at the same time decreasing the quality of the consumers food. I dont really like the idea of antibiotics at all and at the very least they should be regulated.

  3. The use of artificial means to accelerate growth bothers me. I do not care what substance or drug is used to do so; it just bothers me. That antibiotics could be used for such an arbitrary purpose is disturbing to me. This should be regulated, if not banned. To me antibiotics are to promote health and well being, and not to defy endocrinologists’ expectations.

  4. I agree with your viewpoints. If there is going to be any use of antibiotics, it should be properly regulated to ensure that there are no 'superbug diseases' that arise. I like how you brought an interesting and different perspective regarding the limited-regulated of these antibiotics.
